Franz Surges was born in Remagen, located on the Rhine, in 1958; studies at the St Gregorius University of Catholic Church Music in Aachen; completes education as cantor with degree (“A-Examen”). Continuation of studies at the MHS Köln (Cologne University of Music), Dep. Aachen; Degrees: Diploma in music pedagogy for organ; diploma in performing arts with an organ major (instructed by church music director Viktor Scholz); diploma in music pedagogy for music theory and composition (instructed by Prof. Herbert Nobis).
Composition studies with Tilo Medek; participation in several international master classes and music academies; currently active as church musician, composer, choral director, and music teacher (including C-level instruction for church musicians) in Eschweiler.
Awards: Won prizes at several composition competitions, amongst them a first prize at the competition ”Zur Förderung der zeitgenössischen Musikpflege in den Gottesdiensten“ (in support of the use of contemporary music during mass) in Schwäbisch Gmünd (1991) as part of the framework program “Festreihe Europäische Kirchenmusik” (celebration of European church music), and a first prize at the competition “Hoftrompeter - Mayrhofer-Preis“ (the court trumpeter – Mayrhofer prize) in Passau in 2002.
Franz Surges’ works have been published exclusively by Edition Dohr since 1993.
