Flute is my chosen instrument and I've performed
widely as a flutist. It's an instrument that has
featured in many of my compositions, though I've
written only one other for flute alone, my
"Tannenbaum Variations" in 1984. When asked to
compose another piece for flute alone in 1999, I
had been reading about the ancient Syrian fertility
goddess named Attargatis, whose altar lay in the
middle of a lake and whose worship was connected
with the adoration of water, hence the new work's
title.
