"Molter is well known to clarinettists as the writer of early clarinet concertos. As an early classical composer he enjoyed writing for the newly invented clarinet and considered it a useful alternative to trumpets and horns in his Sinfonia. These five short movements are much simpler than the concertos as they were written with trumpets and horns in mind. They are all in C major, two short sections each, and are a good example of early classical writing. Harmonically they are straightforward. The first Allegro features some typical fanfare like writing and this is followed by a Menuett and three more Allegros in different time signatures. Parts one and two are roughly equal although part one does include altissimo D, E and F at some point. Part three is easier, ranging from low G to G above the stave and, resembling a natural horn, plays mostly tonic and dominant pitches. I found playing the third part a little tedious after a while but the movements are light and entertaining and a less experienced player should have enough to keep them occupied. Total playing time is just over six minutes although a few movements might also be a good addition to a programme for players of grade three to five."
