Ulrich Kallmeyer, *1963 in Monheim/Rheinland, studierte Schulmusik und Klavier in Hannover, danach bis 1991 Musiktheorie in Köln sowie bis 1993 Komposition in der Klasse für „Neues Musiktheater“ bei Mauricio Kagel. Nach Beendigung seiner Studien übernahm er Lehrtätigkeiten an den Hochschulen in Köln und Hannover. Seit 1999 ist er Instrumentallehrer und Fachleiter für Musiktheorie/Gehörbildung der Abteilung studienvorbereitende Ausbildung an der Städtischen Musikschule in Braunschweig.
Bei der methodisch-didaktischen Gestaltung der Instrumental- und der Hörerziehung sowie des theoretischen Unterrichts war es vor allem die relative Solmisation, deren Möglichkeiten zur ganzheitlichen, alle Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse miteinander verknüpfenden Musikpraxis ihn nachhaltig beeinflussten und anregten. Hiervon ausgehend ist es sein Anliegen, mit ihrer Hilfe intensive praktisch nachvollziehende musikgeschichtliche Einblicke zu eröffnen und ihrer nachhaltigen Ausstrahlung auf Bereiche wie Harmonik, Modulation, Partitur- und Notationskunde, hier speziell Lesetechniken, Transpositions- und Schlüsselwesen, nach-zugehen.
Eine größere Anzahl seiner Kompositionen widmen sich den vielfältigen Möglichkeiten des Musiktheaters. Neben DIE LYKISCHEN BAUERN für einen Darsteller, Streichtrio, Schlagzeug und Tonband (Köln 1991) und dem Kammerspiel DR. FREUDS HORNWUNDER für drei Darsteller, Bariton und 19 Instrumentalisten (Köln 1992/93) ist hier vor allem die Kammeroper PREUSSISCH DOPPELBILD (Hannover 1996) und die mit dem „Neuköllner Opernpreis“ ausgezeichnete Kurzoper DER KALTE ADAM (Berlin 1997) zu nennen.
Das SZENISCHE KONZERT für einen Schlagzeugsolisten und großes Orchester wurde vom Westfälischen Sinfonieorchester 1991 in Kamen uraufgeführt. VIER TRINKLIEDER (1993) für Bariton liegen in Partitur für 20 Instrumente und alternativ mit Klavierbegleitung vor. ZWEI SCHERTZHAFFTE LIEDER (1998) nutzen bei der Ausdeutung ironischer Volkspoesie die breite Farbpalette zeitgenössischen Chorklangs. Die ausladenden 12 VARIATIONS ON „THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER“ (1996) für Klavier allein wurden, mit einigen sparsamen szenischen Anteilen angereichert, vom Komponisten selbst uraufgeführt. PIFF PAFF TRARA (2004) ist ein ebenfalls szenisches Instrumentalduo, während die zuletzt entstandenen VARIATIONEN ÜBER: „MAN MÜSSTE KLAVIERSPIELEN KÖNNEN“ für Klavier (2008) und die SONATE FÜR VIOLONCELLO UND KLAVIER (2009) wieder reine Instrumentalwerke sind.
Biographical sketch
Ulrich Kallmeyer, born 1963 in Monheim/Rhineland, Germany, studied music education and piano in Hanover, followed by music theory in Cologne until 1991 as well as composition in „Neues Musiktheater“ with Mauricio Kagel until 1993. After finishing his studies he taught at the music conservatories in Cologne and Hanover. Since 1999 he has taught piano and leads the music theory / ear training section of the department for “Studienvorbereitende Ausbilding” (Department for pupils preparing to study music) at the Städtische Musikschule Braunschweig.
In the methodical, didactic planning of the instrumental and ear training, as well as the music theory lessons, it was especially the relative solmization, with its possibilities for holistic, all-encompassing music practice, which provided the greatest stimulation and influence on the lessons. On this basis, it is his intention, with the help of the solmization, to disclose intense, historical insights and to investigate its influence in the areas of harmony, modulation, score and notation, here especially reading techniques, transposition and use of keys.
A large number of his compositions are devoted to the various styles of musical theatre. Besides DIE LYKISCHEN BAUERN with one actor, a string trio, percussion and play back (Cologne 1991) and the Kammerspiel, DR. FREUDS HORNWUNDER with 3 actors, baritone and 19 instruments (Cologne 1992/93), special mention goes here to the chamber opera PREUSSISCH DOPPELBILD (Hanover 1996) and the short opera DER KALTE ADAM (Berlin, 1997) which was awarded the “Neuköllner Opernpreis”.
SZENISCHE KONZERT for solo percussionist and full orchestra had its premier with the Westphalian Symphony orchestra in 1991 in Kamen. VIER TRINKLIEDER (1993) for baritone is available in a score for 20 instruments or alternatively, with piano accompaniment. ZWEI SCHERTZHAFFTE LIEDER (1998) utilize in their interpretation of ironical folk poetry, the wide colour spectrum of contemporary choir setting.
The grand 12 VARIATIONS ON „THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER“ (1996) for piano were further developed with a few theatrical parts and premiered by the composer, himself. PIFF PAFF TRARA (2004) is likewise a dramatic instrumental duo, while the recent VARIATIONEN ÜBER “MAN MÜSSTE KLAVIERSPIELEN KÖNNEN” for piano (2008) and the SONATA FÜR VIOLONCELLO UND KLAVIER (2009) are again purely instrumental pieces.
