Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) hieß eigentlich Charles Gardès und stammt aus Frankreich; als Kind kam er zusammen mit seiner Mutter nach Buenos Aires in Argentinien. Gardel war der erste Tango-Sänger Argentiniens und gilt bis heute als der auch bedeutendste. Am 24. Juni 1935 kam Gardel in Medellin bei einem Flugzeugunglück ums Leben, als er gerade auf dem Höhepunkt seines Ruhms stand und eine großangelegte Tournee vor sich hatte.
