Kurt Bikkembergs

Kurt Bikkembergs, was born in Hasselt (B) in 1963. He studied musicpedagogics, choral direction, composition and orchestral direction at the Lemmens Institute in Louvain. He graduated for composition with the Laureate diploma, and also won a first prize cum laude in composition. Kurt Bikkembergs studied with Luc Van Hove and Heinz Kratochwil (A). He is the director of the Lemmens Institute's choir and teaches in the same school music-writing, counterpoint, choral direction and composition. Besides free-lance activity's with the professional choirs of the Belgian Broadcasting Company (VRT) and the Flemish Opera, he also directs the Capella di Voce and the Capella Beatae Mariae ad Lacum in Tienen, As a composer, Kurt Bikkembergs has written 200 works, from which 70 have already been published in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland. As Kurt Bikkembergs is making his name, more and more famous ensembles, soloists and festivals in Belgium and abroad commission him to write musical works for them. (He wrote "Psalm 117 Laudate Dominum" for the international competition for choral singing 'Cantate Maasmechelen', "Requiem aeternam" for organplayer Jo Hermans, "Tabor" for the '30th National Competition for Music and Diction, "Missa in honorem Cordis Jesu" for the festival 'Orgel Plus' in Bottrop, Germany, and "Remedie jeghens de peste" for the International Festival for the Youth in Neerpelt). Forty of Bikkembergs' works have been recorded for broadcasting in Belgium and the Netherlands or are recorded on L.P., cassette or CD. The composer recieved several awards in national and international competitions (the P. Meyers-prize in Hasselt, the 'Harmonia' competion in the Netherlands) In 1993, he was awarded the prestigious prize 'Cera-Youth and Music in Flanders' for the totality of his work. For the near future he has become orders to write music for Flanders Recorder Quartet "Vier op een rif, an oratorium for the "Lemmensinstituut" and some major compositions for several choirs in Belgium.
